Chapter 10

Bzzzt. Bzzzt. Bzzzt.

Groaning, Cal closed his eyes tighter even as he rolled halfway over and stretched on his back to snatch his phone from the nightstand. His body pressed hot and comfortable against the man in bed with him, and he didn’t want to move. He’d been having the best dream...

“Riggs,” he croaked into the mouthpiece. He hadn’t even bothered to open his eyes and check Caller ID.

“Riggs, you sound like shit.”

He stifled another groan and pulled his arm free from where it had been pillowing Hunter’s head.

Crap. Hunter. Right.

Rubbing his suddenly throbbing temples with one hand, Cal sat up and scooted back, pressing his shoulders to the headboard. “Wasn’t expecting a call so early, Agent Sinclair.”

“Early? It’s nine-thirty, Riggs. Pull yourself together.”

Cal pinched the bridge of his nose and looked at his phone to confirm the time. Darn it.

“Yes, ma’am. You got something for me?”

“Forensics are in. It’s Halsell’s DNA all over the scene. We’ve got plenty to bring him in for vandalism, but that’s not what we’re really after. I’ve got a phone call in to the judge to get us warrants for arrest, search, and seizure.” Sinclair let that sink in and then changed tack, her tone going from businesslike to pep talk. “You’re lead detective on this, and it’s heating up. Time to get off the bench and back in the game, agent. You need to drive down to Tacoma, pay Mr. Halsell a visit. See if you can weasel anything else out of him before we arrest him. You know once he’s Mirandized, he’s gonna lawyer up. Play the gay card. See if you can piss him off, get him talking.”

“Yes, ma’am, Agent Sinclair. Right away.” Cal blew out a sleepy breath as she hung up on him mid-sentence. Then he braced himself and looked over at the ridiculously sexy sprawl of Hunter Walsh sacked out in his bed.

Yesterday morning, he’d felt bad perving. Hunter hadn’t had a choice about where he was going to wake up. He’d been sick and miserable. Cal hadn’t known if in the morning he was going to be taking a statement about the attempted rape, taking Hunter to the hospital, or taking blood pressure medicine for the inevitable frustration of dealing with Hunter’s temper. In the end, well...

In the end, Hunter had stayed in Cal’s bed. By the end of the day, Hunter seemed mobile enough to get down the stairs, but he had exhausted himself early and dozed in Cal’s bed. When bedtime came, it seemed more awkward to kick Hunter out than to crawl under the blankets next to him.

Cal hadn’t intended to cuddle him. That happened in the night. Now the space between them felt charged, as if it was magnetized and drawing Cal back in. He wanted to settle his chest against Hunter’s back and succumb to the warmth and his sweet smell.

Instead, Cal put his phone on the nightstand and gave Hunter’s shoulder a shake. When Hunter stirred, Cal asked, “Feeling better? I’ve gotta go out.
